Dogs are very good at adapting.
A dog rarely wakes up one morning and suddenly becomes “old.” More often, the changes are small enough that we accommodate them without realizing what we're seeing.
Maybe the run becomes a walk. The jump onto the couch takes an extra try. They hesitate before getting into the vehicle. They lie down differently. They choose the rug instead of the slick floor. They stop following you upstairs every time.
It's easy to call those things aging. Sometimes they are. But changes in movement can also be early clues that strength, comfort, joint function, or confidence is changing.
And osteoarthritis isn't exclusively a disease of elderly dogs. Developmental joint disorders and previous injuries can begin the process much earlier in life.
Joint health starts before joint pain.
The COAST canine osteoarthritis framework recognizes something I think is incredibly important: there are dogs with no clinical signs of osteoarthritis who nevertheless have identifiable risk factors. In other words, joint care doesn't have to begin with a limping dog.
Breed and genetics can matter. So can developmental orthopedic disease, previous joint trauma, excess body weight, physical conditioning, and the demands we place on working or sporting dogs.
International COAST consensus recommendations actually include foundational joint-health discussions for dogs across life stages—including body and muscle condition, exercise, nutrition, and proactive evaluation. That is a very different mindset from waiting until a dog hurts and then reacting.
Mobility isn't just about joints.
A dog moves with an entire system: joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, body weight, balance, coordination, and confidence. Protecting mobility means paying attention to the whole system.
Muscle is part of the equation.
Strong muscles help stabilize joints and support movement. When discomfort causes a dog to use a limb less, muscle can decline. Less muscle can make movement harder, which may reduce activity further. That can become a difficult cycle.
This is why appropriate exercise isn't simply recreation. It is part of maintaining physical capacity.
That doesn't mean every dog should be doing high-impact work. Exercise should fit the dog's age, breed, conditioning, orthopedic history, and current health. A conditioned athlete and an unconditioned weekend warrior should not be asked to perform the same way.
COAST guidance specifically recommends life-stage-appropriate exercise and cautions about high-impact activity and sudden twists and turns in unconditioned dogs.
Body condition matters more than many people realize.
Every extra pound has to move through the dog's musculoskeletal system. But weight isn't the only number worth watching. Body condition and muscle condition are different things.
A dog can lose muscle while maintaining—or even gaining—body weight. That is one reason AAHA nutrition guidelines recommend assessing both body condition score and muscle condition score as part of routine nutritional evaluation.
For a dog carrying excess body fat, getting to an appropriate body condition is one of the most practical ways to reduce unnecessary mechanical load. For a lean dog losing muscle, the conversation is different: we need to understand why and think about nutrition, activity, pain, and underlying disease.
Your house can either help or fight them.
Watch an older or uncomfortable dog cross a slick floor and you'll understand this immediately.
Traction matters. So does the height of the vehicle they climb into, the stairs they navigate every day, where their food and water are located, and whether they have a comfortable place to rest.
Environmental modifications don't have to look clinical. Rugs or runners on slippery floors, a stable ramp, better footing around stairs, and thoughtful placement of beds can make everyday movement easier. COAST guidelines specifically recognize environmental modification when problem areas such as hard, slippery flooring are identified.
Learn your dog's normal.
You see your dog every day, which is both an advantage and a problem. You're in the best position to notice subtle changes—but gradual changes are also easy to normalize.
Every so often, deliberately watch your dog move. Watch them rise from sleep. Walk away from you and back toward you. Turn in both directions. Go up a few steps. Get into the vehicle. Notice whether they sit squarely or shift their weight.
Videos are useful because memory is terrible at comparing a dog today with the same dog six months ago. A short video taken periodically can make subtle changes much easier to recognize and can also give your veterinarian useful information about how the dog moves at home.
Support shouldn't begin at the crisis point.
There is a pattern I wish we could change in canine joint care: nothing, nothing, nothing—and then suddenly everything.
The dog becomes visibly uncomfortable, and only then do we start thinking about weight, exercise, rehabilitation, environmental changes, pain management, nutrition, and joint support.
Those interventions can still matter tremendously. But why wait to care about strength, conditioning, body composition, nutrition, and joint biology until mobility has already been lost?
Proactive support doesn't mean medicating a healthy young dog for a disease it doesn't have. It means building habits that protect physical function and paying attention early enough to respond intelligently when something changes.
Where nutrition and joint support fit.
Nutrition is one part of a much larger mobility picture. No chew, powder, food, medication, or therapy can compensate for every other factor.

When I think about mobility, I don't think primarily about getting a dog from point A to point B.
I think about the things movement makes possible: hiking beside us, running through the field, getting into the truck, swimming, training, exploring, playing with another dog, or simply getting up comfortably to follow us into the next room.
Mobility is independence. It is participation. It is a huge part of quality of life.
We cannot prevent every orthopedic problem, and we cannot stop aging. But we can pay attention sooner. We can keep dogs appropriately lean and strong. We can condition them intelligently. We can make their environment easier to navigate. We can talk with our veterinarians before a small change becomes a major one.
Don't wait until they slow down to start thinking about keeping them moving.
