Why Titer Testing Matters

Vaccination is an important part of preventive care. Titer testing can add another piece of information to the conversation—especially when we're trying to make thoughtful, individualized decisions for the dog in front of us.

What is a titer test?

A vaccine titer is a blood test that looks for antibodies against a specific infectious disease. In dogs, antibody testing is most useful for several of the major viral core diseases—particularly canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, and canine adenovirus.

That sounds simple, but there is an important distinction: a titer does not measure the dog's entire immune system. Immunity involves more than circulating antibodies, including immune memory and cell-mediated responses. So a titer is useful information, not a complete report card on immunity.

Why consider testing?

For some dogs, the question isn't whether vaccination matters. It absolutely does. The better question may be whether additional information can help guide the timing of revaccination.

The 2024 World Small Animal Veterinary Association vaccination guidelines support serologic testing for canine distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus in several situations. WSAVA notes that testing can help confirm a young dog's response after vaccination and can help optimize revaccination intervals in mature adult dogs.

The goal isn't “vaccines versus titers.”

The more useful conversation is how vaccination history, disease risk, age, health, lifestyle, local disease prevalence, legal requirements, and—when appropriate—serology can be considered together.

What can a positive result tell us?

After maternally derived antibodies have disappeared, detecting antibodies tells us that the immune system has responded to vaccination or previous exposure to that antigen. For distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus, antibody testing can therefore provide meaningful information when making vaccination-related decisions.

But interpreting a numerical result isn't always as straightforward as comparing it with a single universal “protective” cutoff. The American Animal Hospital Association notes that testing methods and laboratories can vary and does not designate universal protective titer values in its canine vaccination guidelines.

And what can't it tell us?

A titer cannot promise that a dog will never become infected. It also doesn't fully measure cell-mediated immunity. A low or undetectable antibody result doesn't automatically describe every component of immune memory, just as a positive result should not be interpreted as a guarantee against disease.

This is one reason we don't think titer testing should be reduced to a simple red-light/green-light decision without veterinary interpretation.

Titers aren't equally useful for every vaccine

The strongest practical use of canine serology is for the viral core vaccines—distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus. It should not be assumed that a titer can be substituted for every vaccine on a dog's schedule. Other vaccines have different immune responses, durations of immunity, exposure considerations, and testing limitations.

Rabies deserves special attention. Vaccination requirements are governed by law, and an antibody result should not be assumed to replace legally required rabies vaccination. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so this is a conversation to have with your veterinarian and, when necessary, local public-health authorities.

Individualized doesn't mean unprotected

We like individualized care. But individualized vaccination should not become a reason to leave dogs unnecessarily vulnerable to serious preventable disease. Current AAHA guidance considers core vaccination an essential part of canine preventive healthcare and recommends that noncore vaccines be selected according to an individual dog's lifestyle and exposure risk.

That's the balance we think matters: protect the dog, understand the evidence, and use the information available to make decisions thoughtfully rather than automatically.

Questions worth asking your veterinarian

Instead of simply asking, “Does my dog need shots this year?” consider asking whether your dog's vaccination plan reflects age, health history, travel, boarding or daycare exposure, wildlife exposure, geography, and previous vaccine reactions. You can also ask whether antibody testing for distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus would provide useful information for your particular dog.

A good preventive-care visit should be bigger than a vaccine calendar. It should be a conversation about the whole dog.
